How red light and vibration therapy work
Each 40-minute session combines two non-invasive technologies. Here is what they are, what the research says, and what to expect.
Red light therapy (photobiomodulation)
Photobiomodulation, usually called red light therapy, uses specific wavelengths of red or near-infrared light. It is not a laser and contains no UV, so it does not tan or burn.
Researchers believe the main target is an enzyme in your mitochondria, the parts of your cells that produce energy. The enzyme absorbs red light, which may help cells make energy more efficiently and calm inflammation. More than 50 years of research and over a thousand published studies have looked at uses ranging from skin and pain to recovery.
Red light at 635 nm works mostly on the skin and the soft tissue just below it, which is why it is used for skin, body contouring and surface-level aches.
The panel we use
The MedWave Optimum-100S is designed and built in South Africa by MedWave, a SAHPRA-registered medical device establishment.
- 635 nm
- single red wavelength
- 585
- LEDs on one panel
- 85–100
- mW/cm² light output
Whole-body vibration
On the HyperVibe plate, vibration travels up through your feet and makes your muscles contract and relax many times a second, without you having to think about it.
That muscle activity gets your circulation and lymphatic system moving. MedWave pairs the plate with its red light panels because better blood flow helps deliver oxygen to the tissue being treated, and studies have linked whole-body vibration to higher oxygen use and energy expenditure during a session.
Why combine them?
- Light works at the level of your cells.
- Vibration gets blood and lymph moving through the area.
- Together they fit into one 40-minute visit, with no downtime afterwards.

Questions about the treatment
What is red light therapy?
Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation (PBM), shines specific wavelengths of light onto the skin. Research suggests the light is absorbed by the mitochondria in your cells, which may help them produce energy more efficiently. It does not use UV light and does not tan or burn the skin.
What does the vibration plate do?
You stand on the HyperVibe plate while it vibrates. The vibration makes your muscles contract and relax many times a second, which gets your circulation going. MedWave pairs it with red light because better circulation helps deliver blood and oxygen to the area being treated.
What does it feel like?
The red light feels gently warm. The plate feels like a fast, steady buzz through your legs and body. Most people find the session relaxing. Tell us straight away if anything feels uncomfortable.
Is it suitable for everyone?
Most healthy adults can use it. Please check with your doctor first if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker or other electronic implant, epilepsy, a recent blood clot, cancer, or recent surgery, or if you take medication that makes you sensitive to light. We go through a short health questionnaire with everyone before their first session.
What we don't claim. Red light therapy and whole-body vibration are wellness treatments. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition, and results vary. They work best alongside medical care, not instead of it.
